Holy Ghosts of Texas

This is the one song on the record that I have already released- on my first LP, "Glory". It was one of those oh-so-rare songs that comes in one big burst, all the lyrics in one 10 minute song session. (Thanks to Kevin Burkett for help in arrangement). We wanted to give this song one more chance-- and the big old farmhouse we recorded in was totally the right setting for a song about lonely ghosts. Eric was up in the attic, and I was in the living room, and we tried a couple takes, and this was what we got. Later on, Brooks and Austin laid down some ghostly guitar and vibes, but otherwise we left it alone.
Holy Ghosts of Texas

The holy ghosts of Texas
make their way across the night
chasing their devils till the morning
and all the lonely ghosts watching
as they spread on through the sky
they say lord, I’m gonna join them when I die

and the morning rain is falling
on the pavement so forlorn
the whistle blows and the night is over
and the graveyard shift is ending all the people going home
if they’re lucky they don’t go home alone

mama don’t shed a tear for me
you know I’m gonna make it somehow
and don’t waste your prayers on me
I’m a survivor anyhow

I don’t want to go to Jesus
when it comes my time to die
if heavens just full of lonely people
I just want a silver saddle
let me ride up in the night
Lord, I’m gonna going them when I die
