Annie Go Down South
They got married by the side of the road
it’s Vegas, baby, no one has to know
the ring was just plastic and a lollipop
she’d get her something better when
she got herself standing up,one day
Annie was a Mormon but she grew out of that
fifteen years old in a cowboy hat
plastic boots and a little white dress
blond hair that was such a beautiful mess
James was twenty-five but he said seventeen
a man has got to keep his record clean
he loved her for all the world
wanted her to be his only girl
and the preacher was a man who had done some time
got out of jail when he found the light
he was internet certified by Jesus Christ
liked to say he’d seen all walks of life in this world
he said Annie go down south,
we’ll come stumbling down that highway
Annie go down south, we’ll go stumbling down that road
the suns coming up on the city of lights now
and she’s still asleep in her wedding gown
day will bring a headache like she’s never known
it’s a long way till she finds a place that’s like home
